Orange Layering

I haven't worn a nice orange jelly in a while, so I dug through my stash and came across one in my foreign polish drawer that was untried. Tuli sent me a little treasure trove of Israeli goodies a while back, and this yummy orange scented Life polish was one I haven't used yet. It's a nice coverage jelly, a bit burnt orange in color. I used two coats here to create the base, and decided to go ahead and layer it with some golds, since I love orange and gold together. First I did an all over layer of Essie As Gold As It Gets, and then I did a little bit of Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Set The Stage at my tips, for a chunky gold glitter gradient. I've been craving bright, fun colors so this layering set definitely filled that bill.

I know I hadn't been posting a lot, but I've got a lot going on lately, so I actually hadn't spent a lot of time on my computer at all. I think I even missed my first blogiversary on Nightly Nails! *sigh* Oh well, things just creep up on you when you least expect it. I'm ridiculously behind on blog reading, as well!

Guest Post

Hey everyone! I'm going to try to get some actual swatches done this week, so I should have some new posts coming up soon. I'm still pretty under the weather, I think my immune system sucks and I need to have vitamin c shot directly into my veins. Sheesh. Anyway! I wanted to let you guys know that I am being featured at the ever so lovely Marta's blog, ChitChat Nails, while she's away! I did a fun layering for her, I hope you guys enjoy it.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Hey everyone! Last minute post, as I've been pretty sick with a cold that kept me in bed for the last three days - boy, it was a doozy. Today is my anniversary - 12 years ago today, hubby and I went on our first date. We watched Message In A Bottle, in a jam packed theater. Kind of hard to believe it was that long ago, seems like just yesterday. We don't have anything special planned for today but we'll do something over his days off, Thursday or Friday.
Anyway, since I rather suck at nail art, I thought I'd do some pink skittles on my nails. I don't have a shot with my thumb in it, but from pinkie to index, I'm wearing Duri Bridal Bells, Sally Hansen Diamond Strength Wedding Crasher, Sinful Colors Beautiful Girl, and China Glaze Strawberry Fields. Duri Bachelorette Party is on my unseen thumb, it's a cute coral pink jelly.

I hope you guys are having a great day!

SpaRitual Sacred Ground

Hey everyone! Sorry I missed out on posting last night, my dad had day surgery and it took a lot longer than expected. Isn't that the way things go? Hah. It's been a week, for sure! Anyway, I'm excited to show you my very first SpaRitual polish, ever. I recently placed an order with Apothica, which is a sister site to SkinCareRx and SkinBotanica. I have an upcoming review of my ordering experience, since I haven't done an etailer review in quite a while and I've been meaning to do some for you guys. Anyway - long story short, Apothica carries SpaRitual polishes, in addition to other brands, and I've been wanting to try them out!
Sacred Ground was from the Fall 2011 collection, and it's stunning. It covered in only two coats - wonderfully opaque! I love the rubber cap, too. This is a gray creme base with stunning gold and purple shimmer. So amazingly unique, I don't have anything like this! I have a semi-decent macro to show you, too.

Click to enlarge these if you would like, they show detail pretty well. Isn't this cool?

Max Factor Fantasy Fire

Oh, boy. You guys have probably seen the huge stir that Max Factor Fantasy Fire has created among the nail polish bloggers - and I'd have to say that's warranted. This is like the true sister to Clarins 230, otherwise known  as Unicorn Pee! It looks like a purple based jelly loaded down with shimmer that shifts from red to gold to green. I was gifted my precioussssss bottle of Fantasy Fire from Esther, who has a blog called Fab Fingertips and is a total sweetheart! Since these little bottles of magic are so tiny, I decided to do some layering with this.
I've got a redonkolous amount of photos. Seriously. Consider yourselves warned! Haha. Anyway, the first six photos are Fantasy Fire layered over Deborah Lippmann Call Me Irresponsible, a gorgeous reddish purple jelly. And the last three photos are over Orly's Royal Navy, a royal blue jelly with green shimmers.
I have to tell you guys, there are a couple of indoor shots in here, which I ordinarily don't do, but the only way I could seem to capture the strong green shift was in lowest light, which was indoors with no lights on during the day. Oh well, at least you'll have an idea of what it looks like. There are absolutely no full sun shots because it's been rainy for the last few days here. All of these are in varying degrees of low light.
I'll shut up with the raving and get to those photos.

Click to enlarge, please! You're missing out if you don't. I wish I could have captured how rich the combo of Fantasy Fire and Call Me Irresponsible was, but I sadly did not. It's much, much better in person. Thankfully the stunning combo with Orly Royal Navy is definitely coming across!

Essie Your Hut Or Mine

How about a really pretty pink for upcoming Valentine's Day? Your Hut Or Mine is a gorgeous mid toned pink with a pink metallic shimmer that shows up nicely on the nail. I'd been kind of looking at this for a while, and although I'm not a big fan of pinks, I really like this and I think it suits my skintone pretty well. Actually, from all the swatches I've seen, it seems to suit many skintones across the board - added bonus!
I only needed two coats for this, it covers well and no application issues.

For some reason this reminds me of fruit punch. Isn't it a pretty shade?

Essie Sand Tropez and Sally Hansen Gem Crush Big Money

I realized that I have worn Essie's Sand Tropez several times, but I've never gotten a swatch posted on Nightly Nails. It made a good base for Sally Hansen Gem Crush Big Money, so I went ahead and snapped a photo of it on its own.
Sand Tropez is a nude - it reminds me a lot of Zoya Farah, although maybe a bit darker? I love shades like this when I need a palette cleanser, and they make a good "underwear" base too. I found this very easy to work with and I only needed two coats.
The only Sally Hansen Gem Crush I ended up getting was Big Money - I think I was a bit on glitter overload at the time these came out, but my mom loved all of them so much, she bought them all. Big Money is really cool and unusual looking to me though, it's a sandy tan metallic glitter with bits of lilac glitter interspersed throughout. I'm sure I could probably layer this up on its own, maybe three coats for complete opacity? Because the one coat I put over Sand Tropez had pretty good coverage. Also, I could swipe this and not have to pat it!
This to me came out to be a super pretty combo.

Adds a bit of bling to a nude base! Really cool, I think.

Sinful Colors Nirvana

Okay, I've got a huge backlog of untrieds that I'm slowly working my way through. I bought Nirvana during one of the half off sales at Walgreen's, and hadn't actually tried it! It reminds me a lot of OPI You Don't Know Jacques, although I no longer have that to compare.
The one thing I remember for sure is that YDKJ is a straight up creme, and Nirvana is not - it's more of a jelly creme, closer to the jelly side than the creme. I needed three coats for opacity, but I absolutely loved applying it, jellies seem to be a bit easier to work with, less lumpy/bumpy/prone for mess than cremes, so I love a good jelly creme. This is my kind of neutral, a gorgeous mushroom shade!

I actually had it in mind to layer this with another Sinful Colors, Smoking Hot, but I somehow managed to put a huge chunk into my pinkie finger while I was waiting for it to dry. I'll try that out another time and show you, because Smoking Hot is pretty awesome!

China Glaze Pelican Gray and Spoiled Shuffle The Deck

Hi everyone! I know, I've been away a lot this week and I didn't intend to have this much downtime on Nightly Nails, but my hubby got sick and has been in the hospital, so I didn't get anything prepped for posting.
I got a sweet little package in the mail from one of my longtime readers and dear friend Rebecca this week, she sent me one of the new Wet N Wild Spoiled glitters, Shuffle The Deck. This is such a pretty glitter combination - black, silver, and raspberry red in a clear base? Sounds like a layering combo to me! So I thought I could put this over a white - and then I thought about it some more, and I thought I might actually use a gray that I haven't posted yet. I absolutely adore gray polishes but I haven't posted too many here, so I'll try to show a few more. I don't know if I have enough for a full week for Focus On, but definitely I have a few!
I chose China Glaze's beautiful light gray, Pelican Gray, from last year's Anchors Away collection. This is a gorgeous gray with silvery shimmer, and because the base is a creme, it's more of a subtle effect, but you can definitely see it. This is well pigmented so you'll only need two coats.
With Shuffle The Deck, I only used one coat, but I had to use the pat on method of application, because swiping on does not distribute very well. It's not too hard to master, just something to be mindful of.

I think this combination is so super cute! Hopefully if you click to enlarge the photos, you can see the subtle shimmer in Pelican Gray. Rebecca, thank you so much honey!

Press Release: Duri Tip-Toes to the Altar!

Take a Walk Down the Aisle with Duri Cosmetics' A Perfect Match Collection!

Whether in the spotlight as the Bride, on the sidelines as a member of the Wedding Party or just a well-manicured guest—planning the perfect 20 (mani & pedi) is a beauty must that should top every bride's checklist.  From BRIDESMAID-inspired bachelorette parties and themed bridal showers to the exchange of rings,  tossing (and catching) of the bouquet and the most picture-perfect honeymoon – it's a hands-on experience.   Selecting the right shade and shape is as much a personal choice as picking out the perfect gown!  Duri Cosmetics offers a host of options to meet any Bridezilla's exacting standards—from classic french and creamy pearls to brilliant brights that nail the special day.
"We are seeing more and more brides go from a natural nail for her walk down the aisle to a dramatic pop of color to accent her reception change out dress," says Faina Ritz, creator of Duri Cosmetics and the visionaire behind Duri's A Perfect Match Collection"Brides can start with a light shade like Wedding Vows ( pretty pale pink) and then apply a coat of a deeper color like Runaway Bride (cranberry red) after the wedding for a whole new look at the reception!"
As for bridesmaid manicures, Ritz suggests going outside the box and avoid matching color choices.  If the bridesmaids are wearing a neutral color dress, they don't have to wear a neutral polish.   Allow the look to "pop" with a richer color polish such as Happily Ever After (bright classic pink) and vice versa for bright color gowns (pale them down with a pale).
For bachelorette parties, Ritz suggests going a little crazy with fun, loud hues like Bachelorette Party(a fun orangy-red) and Girl Power (shimmery magenta) - perfect shades for the ultimate girls' night out.
Whether a warm weather event or winter wedding – once the band starts to play, those stilettos will come off, so don't forget the lower 10.  Use a bright, but classic shade like Every Day Is A Valentine (sheer red) to give your toes a little kick!  And for the classic bride, remix the French Pedicure with Lily Of The Valley (sophisticated light pink)
A Perfect Match collection includes 12 vow inspired hues…
I Do - a shimmery white for french manicure; Wedding Vows- a pretty pale pink;Bridal Bellsa clear, glossy bright pinkLily Of The Valley- a sophisticated light pink;Daddy's Girla sheer baby pink; Champagne bubblesa shimmery pearl; Hawaiian Honeymoon- a tropical peachy pink; Bachelorette Partya fun orangy-red; Happily Ever After- a bright classic pink; Girl Power- shimmery magenta; Every Day Is A Valentine- sheer red; Runaway Bridea cranberry red.

And for the perfect Bridal Party gift, mix 'n match three hues to create a collection of polishes for bridesmaids to remember the big day by (i.e. chose colors that match the wedding theme from the dresses down to the flowers).
All Duri nail products are completely safe, environmentally-friendly and free from DBP, TOLUENE and FORMALDEHYDE.

Make Duri Cosmetics your editorials' perfect match! All Duri Cosmetics products are available nationwide at salons, spas and specialty stores, as well as online Individual bottles retail for only $5 each and Custom Gift Sets retail for $15.

Joe Fresh Twilight

Oh man. I think I had this as a lemming - forever! I originally saw it on Liz's blog and immediately fell in love. Flakies in a black jelly base? Yes please! So, now that I have it, let's have a closer look.
Joe Fresh Twilight has rough, unevenly shaped flakies that shift strongly from green to coppery orange to gold. The base is a pretty opaque black jelly - I thought originally I might layer it over Joe Fresh Moss, but you couldn't even see Moss beneath it so I thought I would show you how it looks on its own - here I've got two layers. The shift is indeed strong but for some reason I've had a time trying to capture it on camera, and I just don't know why. You'll see mostly green in my photos and maybe just a smidge of the coppery orange/gold shift. I've tried to photograph this three times with no luck capturing the shift!
Enough moaning, here's my photos.

I really love the textured look of the uneven flakies in this. I think you can see the color shift in the bottle best, in my photos. So, are you lusting after Twilight now?

Sally Hansen Black Tie

Another beauty from the Diamond Strength line! They give us flakies, and now there's a duochrome. Actually, Sally Hansen Black Tie is a multichrome - purple, pink, turquoise, and charcoal. I tried so hard to capture all the colors in this beauty but I don't think I've succeeded, it's much more obvious in person than it is in my swatches, but you can definitely see a purplish-pink shift to turquoise, and you might can see the charcoal a bit.
I've used two coats here, this is a pretty pigmented polish. It seems to hold up pretty well too, I've actually worn this twice since I got it and the first time I wore it for four days before I got antsy and took it off. No chipping, just a nail polish nut getting bored. I have three photos in low light, and one in bright sunlight so that you can see the shimmer really well!

Clicky click to enlarge these, please. Isn't that a beauty? I'm so in love with it. There are some real gems in this Diamond Strength line!

Year of the Dragon by Pure Ice

So the Year of the Dragon pairing by Pure Ice is a gold metallic nail polish and a bright, crisp red crackle polish topper. I had never, for whatever reason, thought to pair these two together and I have to say, I just love the result.
The gold metallic polish is a very warm gold, almost has that "old gold" feel. I adore it - surprising for me, I don't usually care for gold, but this one is right up my alley. It reminds me a bit of Misa Ghetto Fabulous. I only needed two coats for this - I probably could have done one, it was really well pigmented.

I decided to use the red crackle, Show Stopper, in a diagonal pattern. This is a fun change up for me, I really like the look of it done in this direction. I had a mishap with my ring finger and the door, so I had to go over that spot again - forgive me if it looks a bit lumpy, but that's my fault and not the fault of the crackle. Like many crackle polishes, this dries to a matte finish. I added glossy top coat to all of my fingers but my pinkie, because I wanted to show you guys the texture of the matte - I actually like that contrast against the metallic of the gold. Pretty neat!

I know that many of us are burnt out on crackle, but when I wore this I got a TON of compliments on it, and I myself really loved the look of it. The combination of color and texture to me was really pretty and I haven't worn crackle in so long, I think I just enjoyed it. What do you guys think of this?

Quick Update -

Hi everyone - I just wanted you to know, I've been unable to update my blog roll for about a week now. I've heard from other ladies who use Blogger that they're having the same problem. It allows me to add a link, but when I hit the save button, it just sits there - never actually saves. So I've got several new blogs I'm following that I wanted to add to my blogroll - but until this issue is resolved, I can't do it! Very frustrating.
